the take
we watched the whole movie and it never once explains the name, which felt like a choice. so one of us went and looked it up after: it comes from UNABOM, the fbi's case name for the early university and airline targets. that's it. no secret meaning, just government shorthand that stuck. our only note is that a movie this long could spare ten seconds for a title card. and yes, the caption is correct: if trains had been involved, the name would have been worse.
this is the hosts' commentary and speculation for entertainment, not a statement of fact about anyone in it.
the backstory
Unabomber is a 2026 Netflix drama about Ted Kaczynski, with Jacob Tremblay as the young Kaczynski and Russell Crowe as Harvard psychology professor Henry Murray. It premiered on Netflix on September 25, 2026.
The name comes from the FBI. In 1979 an FBI-led task force was formed to investigate the UNABOM case, code-named for the UNiversity and Airline BOMbing targets in the early attacks. The press turned UNABOM into Unabomber, and the name stuck. Kaczynski was arrested in 1996 and pleaded guilty in 1998.
