Why didn't anyone help Carrie at Ewen High?

movies, tv & fandoms ๐Ÿฟ 1:31

the take

in this version Carrie has been homeschooled her whole life and then just shows up at school, and nobody thought to help? one of us was screaming at the screen. assign a guidance counselor, give her a buddy for a day, show her where her classes are. so much could have been avoided. the principal was so incapable of principaling, always pandering to the parents, which to be fair is kind of in the dna of the franchise. the only capable adults were the guidance counselor and the gym teacher, and then, spoiler, the gym teacher dies. she helped Carrie the whole time. she should have been spared. why was Tina spared?

this is the hosts' commentary and speculation for entertainment, not a statement of fact about anyone in it.

the backstory

Spoilers for the whole season ahead. In Mike Flanagan's Carrie on Prime Video, Carrie White has spent her life hidden away at home with her very religious mother Margaret, until her father's sudden death sends her into public high school at Ewen High. In Stephen King's novel and the 1976 movie, she's already a student there when the story starts.

Matthew Lillard plays Principal Grayle, and Amber Midthunder plays gym teacher Rita Desjardin, whose story is expanded here: she was a college track star until a knee injury ended her career. At prom she tries to protect Carrie and is thrown into the burning curtains, and Flanagan has confirmed Ms. D is among the people killed. Tina, played by Josie Totah, survives, injured by flying glass.

  1. 0:00One thing I also found did not make sense in this re-adaptation is the fact that if she was truly homeschooled and then she just appeared at school,
  2. 0:10wouldn't there have been more support?
  3. 0:14The whole time I was watching it, I was like, these things could have been avoided if the guidance counselor or someone had literally been assigned to take Carrie around.
  4. 0:23Because you're saying that she's literally never been in school, and all of a sudden she's supposed to know where her classes are?
  5. 0:29Right, maybe give her a buddy for a day.
  6. 0:31For real.
  7. 0:32And I was just like, okay, no, I was screaming at the screen because I was like, this doesn't make sense.
  8. 0:38So then when I went back and I watched the original, it didn't say anything about her being homeschooled.
  9. 0:42Oh no, and in the original, she's already at the school.
  10. 0:46The mom is already well integrated into the community.
  11. 0:49Did feel that the principal was just so incapable of principaling.
  12. 0:56He was always pandering to the parents.
  13. 0:58That was in the DNA of the franchise, in the whole story.
  14. 1:01The principal didn't really get it.
  15. 1:02He didn't really deal with it.
  16. 1:04He was one of the failures that led to this, we know what happens at prom.
  17. 1:10Travesty.
  18. 1:11The only person that was basically capable was the guidance counselor, and then the gym teacher.
  19. 1:16Yeah, the gym teacher was on point.
  20. 1:18Yes.
  21. 1:19And then, spoiler, she dies?
  22. 1:21I feel like that is so unfair.
  23. 1:24She actually helped Carrie the entire time.
  24. 1:27Like, she should have been spared.
  25. 1:29Why was Tina spared?
